Bangladesh: Rehabilitation of taxiways

In cooperation with COWI, Munck Civil Engineering designed new taxiways and carried out geotechnical investigations in-house, both during the design phase and throughout project execution.

This design & build contract comprises the rehabilitation of taxiways at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, located in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

In autumn 2012, we established a camp in a previously undeveloped soft-soil area of the airport, where vegetation was first cleared and fill placed. Offices and staff facilities were then constructed, along with our own water supply and power generation, including distribution to the entire work area.

We also set up a fully equipped mechanical workshop, steel workshop, and laboratory for geotechnical, aggregate, and asphalt testing. The camp was primarily built using containers and temporary structures and was designed for a total of 250 employees. Throughout the project, ongoing geotechnical investigations were carried out to determine the extent of groundwater lowering and soft soil replacement, which in total exceeded 100,000 m³.

More than 500,000 tons of gravel, stone, concrete, and asphalt materials were crushed and screened, under strict dust control requirements, as the work took place at an airport in full operation. Approximately 15 km of drainage pipes were installed, as well as temporary embankments to protect the aquatic environment during construction, and landscape treatment of about 300,000 m² of wetland areas was carried out.

The work was completed and handed over in July 2014, three months ahead of schedule.
